During a recent TV night, I stumbled upon the Hollywood adaptation of the Japanese monster hit, ‘Godzilla’ (featuring Matthew Broderick). As a fan of the original ‘daikaiju’ films, with a VHS collection that includes ‘Terror of Mechagodzilla’ and ‘Godzilla vs Megalon,’ I was disappointed to see Ferris Bueller and Leon the Hitman in lead roles, while the true star, Godzilla, was underutilised and misrepresented by his on-screen costume.
This experience reminded me of the unfortunate portrayal of the T-Rex in ‘Jurassic Park,’ where she was ridiculed and attacked while trying to protect her young in the city. As a society, we should show empathy towards these monstrous creatures, understanding that their intimidating appearance should not be a reason for mistreatment.
With this mindset, I approached my recent photoshoot with the formidable Amanda, also known as “The A-Bomb.”
Amanda has earned a reputation as a “man-eater” due to her unpredictable behavior, which can be both metaphorically and literally dangerous. During a studio shoot on a Central London balcony, Amanda couldn’t resist the urge to “flash” a van full of armed diplomatic police, nearly causing a diplomatic incident as the van swerved and barely avoided crashing into the Chinese Embassy. A parliamentary inquiry might have followed, but Amanda’s response in her thickest Glaswegian accent – “yer tea’s oot poliss!” – diffused the situation. Amanda can certainly be fierce, making even a creature like Godzilla seem tame in comparison. To work with her, one must always be prepared for the unexpected.
